There are thousands of individuals with dual genetic characteristics, who live among us, how do they live? What is their destiny and how will their future lives, which everyone aspires, be shaped?
In this article, we will look at this category that the binary system falls short of placing it in one of its forms, and it is no less important than any group present in our society, they are neither male nor female, or we may consider them male and female at the same time.

It is a condition in which people are born with dual sexual characteristics between what is considered a standard for masculinity and femininity. It is noted that there are differences from the usual norms for both male and female sexes, the differences may be organic, chromosome / chromosomal or differences in secondary sexual characteristics or other differences that we may or may not know and which may not determine the gender of the newborn categorically as a male or female according to the criteria accepted medically and Legally and / or socially. Medicine adopted this term during the past century, referring to any person who is not classified as male or female.

Being a carrier of double genetic characteristics does not necessarily mean the existence of ambiguity or confusion in the external sexual organs, and does not necessarily indicate the presence of two male and female organs at the same time as is rumored in closed circles, there is not only one species but rather a spectrum of multiple cases.

It is not necessary, as many people think, that the case owner wants to go through the process of “surgical correction”, and it is not in the interest of the newborn to perform surgical / forced corrective intervention to determine their gender early, contrary to what the general public and some doctors think, as this person may decide to belong to the other sex after reaching adulthood. Or in the adult stage, the opposite sex of what was determined by doctors or their parents, the psychological and physical impact on this person will be disastrous, with the increase of symptoms and complications on the impact of the surgical intervention, and Intersex International says that they represent a stereotypical gender on its own after the male and female.

People define this group of society as an insulting, tragic and abhorrent term that is the term “effeminate “Nancy boy” The blame rests with the community that distorts the words and changes them to profound meanings, and not to blame language, religion or Sharia.

“Islam”: an intersex’s story from Libya

Islam was born in a suburb of the city of Tripoli in 1990 and attributed to the gender of the male, but when the doctor noticed that there was ambiguity in its external sexual organs, he told the family and by virtue of customs and traditions and the strange situation, the family was forced to cover up the situation and named it with a name given to the male and the female which is “Islam” and when Islam grew up and her hormones started to affect her body, her gender expressions became closer to the female, and she wanted to live her life as a female.

Parents could not stay in Libya, the family saw that their daughter’s condition was normal and that they were entitled to choose, so they immigrated to Italy and made Islam a process of sexual correction. After years, they returned to Libya and Islam was a complete female. Parents were forced to call her “Nour” in front of people in order to believe that she was their other daughter, and that Islam had not returned and resided in Italy.

They are not, as the Arab media portray them in programs or series, they are independent individuals like us with different personalities, who suffer silently because of society and all they need is support, equality and respect for their choice if they want to be male or female or otherwise because this is one of their rights.

Many campaigns are being held to combat discriminatory and harmful medical practices taking place in children’s hospitals with dual genetic characteristics, and to demand an end to these measures which the United Nations has considered a form of torture and has been condemned by Physicians for Human Rights.

One of these campaigns was launched under the name End Intersex Surgery.

We apologize for the irreversible surgeries that were made to people without their consent. Stop performing medically unnecessary “cosmetic” operations on children, such as surgeries aimed at changing the appearance of the infant’s genitals or their sexual function such as clitoral cuts, removal of functional testes and vaginal tumors. Such surgeries must be delayed until they have the full consent of the person.
